Sights & Sounds of Bath, UK and London

June 22- June 25

London and the surrounding shires or towns have so much to offer outside the museums.  When not in class at the museums we were free to travel . One of our adventures was mastering the London Tube. There are these different lines, you had to pay attention to make sure you were on the right platform and that you got on the correct tube since several tubes came through but went in different directions. Kings Cross was a huge station, you could shop, eat, and get lost as to which direction you should go.  By the end of the week we pretty much figured out whether we needed to be on a District line or Circle line. It was most definitely the best way to travel. If you go to London, download the Tube app. you can plan your route, and it gives you cost options as well.  But be sure to "mind the gap" when exiting the tube.

In Bath we ventured away from the Roman Baths and walked the streets where we heard beautiful music from street musicians and observed a street artist.  The best part of Bath was eating lunch at the Sally Lunn Inn.  I have the recipe for the Sally Lunn buns that I am going to try this weekend.
Not a statue but a guy on a bike suspended in motion. Super Cool!

I ways say yes to chocolate.

A must when in Bath, eat a Sally Lunn's.
A view from the bus as we passes through a shire.

We went to Buckingham Palace for tea with the queen but apparently she had other pressing issues.  Next time we're in London she'll have us to tea.

Instead of riding the London Eye we decided to go to the Shard instead. The Shard, located by the London Bridge is a 95 storey skyscraper. On the 72nd level is an observation deck. Alex and I are not afraid of heights climbed as high as we allowed.  It did not disappoint. The views were spectacular.

The "lift" ride was pretty cool.  Great place to get a 360 view of London while enjoying drinks.

Besides the food from the tea at Fortum and Mason, Alex and I wanted to visit those quaint places or "British" places to eat.  We ended up enjoying meals that weren't exactly British inspired.  We went to Leadenhall Market where there were several pubs and places to eat.  We decided on The Cheese.  We weren't starving but really wanted to sit and enjoy the atmosphere of being in London surrounded by the beauty of Leadenhall Market.  The owner and server recommended a cheese plate. Alex enjoyed a glass of wine while I stuck to beer. The owner and server chatted us up and made our experience all the more enjoyable.

Great with cheese, smooth and tasty.

We enjoyed a good lunch at the Crypt, a place to eat in the church crypt at St. Martins on the Square.  This place catered to the working class so they could afford a hot meal.  Again it was the atmosphere that made it enjoyable.  We drank our share of pots of tea while in London. The cafe' at the Tate Britain had the best latte and lemon polenta cake. That was our quick bite before going to see the Van Gogh Exhibit. Our first hotel had great fish and chips but as we were starving after our 10+ flight we didn't take any pictures. They also had a great bread, olive mix, and clotted cream tray that was a satisfying snack. The Lansbury Hotel, while not in the "prime" London location made up for it with the beautiful bedrooms more like a B&B style and the staff.  The staff were wonderful as they held the kitchen open when we arrived home later than planned after our unexpected tube adventure.

Chez Antoinette

Thursday took us to Covent Garden where there were street performers doing magic, riding unicycles while playing with knives, and of course musicians.  Covent Garden Market during the day is set up like a sort of flea market. At night it is more about eating, socializing and drinking.  We tried a little French place. We ordered a Charcuterie plate.  I think based on our food choices of the week our next trip might be France or Italy.
Quiet and charming, the French accent of our waiter, great beer and conversation with my daughter, created another wonderful memory.
