London Calling: Summer Study Abroad

Guarding the Crown Jewels at the Tower of London

London is Calling!

What a way to begin the summer. Just when you think all of your creative juices have been demolished you take a trip to London to study art and your creative juices are bubbling over.  This summer I had the opportunity to travel to the UK through Jacksonville University's Study Abroad Program. They do this every summer, visiting a different country.  I took my daughter Alex and we left a few days before the class began to do a little touring outside of London.  We visited the town of Oxford and toured the Warner Brothers Studio where they filmed Harry Potter movies.  The artistry that went into creating the movies was phenomenal.

I want to go back here, so much to see and learn.

I love this saying.

Before we left the states and flew across the pond to the UK we had to research and write papers on London and its Architecture, Artists and Commissions, and a book report where 50% of its content was about London. In London we presented our papers at the museums and areas in London where our research led us.  London is a city that is merging its historical buildings with modern architecture, amazingly it fits.

Saturday, June 21
We began our week with a welcome tea at Fortum and Mason.  Here we sampled 4 kinds of tea and received a brief history of tea, think of it as having a tea sommelier come to your table and instruct you on tea. We were treated to delicious sandwiches, scones and bite sized desserts, along with our own pot of tea.  One of my favorites was the lemon curd and jubilee blend.
Another reason I want to go back.

Up early, jump on the tube ( an experience all on its own) and catch the bus to the Roman City of  Bath & the Prehistoric Stonehenge. Here we explored the ancient Roman Baths. It is a well-preserved Roman site once used for public bathing.  The Romans believed the water provide healing. The Roman Baths are located below the modern street level. Bath offers quaint shops, beautiful buildings and gardens.  We ate at Sally Lunn's Historic Eating House, famous for the Sally Lunn Buns. This was probably one of the best meals I ate while in the UK.

So much to share....and we haven't even visited the museums yet.
